Number of days you hunt a season: As many as family, work and sanity allow
Where do you hunt? It varies, but I have enjoyed learning the intricacies of all Arkansas flyways.
Club name: Crockett’s Bluff Hunting Lodge and Big Lake Hunting Club
What kind of gun do you use? Beretta A350
Favorite duck call? RNT Rockin’ R
Rainy, nasty or bluebird sky? Understand and accept the conditions, then adapt and overcome
Favorite duck hunting story/memory? I could never pick one. I will say that any time I am with a group where everyone fully appreciates the passion and work that goes into land and resource management (with some exceptional dog work), those are always my favorite and most gratifying days. Also, being able to take my mom to see all the work I put into one of my first dogs with memorable retrieves is a very special memory.
What got you into hunting? My first memories are deer hunts with my dad, watching my grandpa work a bird dog through cover or trying to keep up with an adopted uncle turkey hunting. My first proper duck hunt was with my dad and uncle at my uncle’s place in Dave’s Bayou, Louisiana. We had a good day with ducks and specks. I was told how spoiled I was for it but never questioned it and have been obsessed ever since.
What is your most unusual “must have” in the duck blind? I try to always have my camera, a hand towel (always useful when working dogs) and some Lance Lemon Creme Crackers. They’re 59 cents at most gas stations, and my wife cracks up about how happy they make me (and now our 2-year-old). The reason is, I seem to have always had them in my possession on the deer, duck or turkey hunts that were not supposed to be anything to write home about, and then they just were. Now, they’re always there.
Where is your go-to spot for breakfast/meals on a hunting weekend? I love to cook, so anywhere that I can grill, smoke a whole duck or fry some fish while enjoying the scenery. Also, cooking a meal in the blind is always great.
If you have children, do you take them duck hunting? If so, any highlights? My boys are two-and-a-half and 7 months, so just a little too young to take. I will say that my 2-year-old loves everything about boat rides, working dogs and has as much or more camo as me. I hope to continue the positive trend and have many memorable experiences with both in the near future.
