Your go-to duck hunting story?
We were on the old “morning-side” of Bayou Meto WMA, between the double ditches, and Hallowell, off Little Bayou Meto — my dad, brother and I with a group walking through the flooded timber. My dad is a big man, probably 6 feet 4 inches. It was a cold morning. I heard a commotion. When I looked back, all I could see was his hat floating on the water. No Dad; he was 100% under water. His hat floated for what seemed like a few seconds. The look on his face when he came up! He was grabbing for any kid or tree he could find. Of course, I scattered out of the way with the others. All got a huge laugh at his expense.
What’s your favorite memory of hunting with your children?
I have a son, Wilson who is now 20 years old, and two daughters, Liza and Margaret. The girls have been on a few duck hunts. The occasional afternoon deer hunt is more their speed — it’s hard to get them up for a morning duck hunt! Wilson is my duck hunting buddy. He and I have made a ton of great memories on hunts. Several hunts we had at Section 25 near Reydell and on a friend’s farm near Cornerstone stand out. Watching Wilson and his friends “do it on their own” is the new stage we are in. I have fun watching Wilson and his friends out-hunt the old men, but I always love when we hunt together.
What got you into duck hunting?
My dad and his friends. I grew up in Pine Bluff and had plenty of opportunities to say the least. Many great hunts with best friends and family. Good dog and bad dog stories. Incredible hunts and complete busts. I have always appreciated just being out there.
Favorite meal after a hunt?
C&B Market in Wabbaseka or Reydell Country Store. If I am at the deer camp near Dumas, then Taylor’s Steakhouse is a must for dinner.
What is your most unusual “must have” in the duck blind?
Nothing is really unusual these days. Most duck hunters are gadget guys! I did buy a new brand of dog whistle last year that I like a lot.
What stage of the hunter are you?
Sportsman (Measures the total experience—appreciation of outdoors, the animal being hunted, the process, companionship of others and conservation.)
Why do you duck hunt?
I like being out there. Love watching ducks and being with friends and family. Some great friends showed me the land conservation side years ago. That has been fun to watch as well.
Which Arkansas executive calls ducks the best?
I have been around some great ones. Some are no longer with us. Roger Smart Jr. has a knack that most should develop. Don’t call much and stay still.
