Greenhead: The Arkansas Duck Hunting Magazine editor Brent Birch appeared on the Channel 5Outdoors program last week, where he reviewed the 2024/2025 duck season.

Asked what he thought of the season, Birch said that while he personally had successful hunts, overall it was a mixed bag for Arkansans.

“January, and the weather in January, really helped. Not that we got an influx of ducks, because even the aerial surveys by (Arkansas) Game and Fish don’t show that we did — we did pick up some ducks, but we’re still well below the long-term average — but it made the ducks get active,” Birch told host Skot Covert.

“The mild weather we had in December really muddled things, as far as success goes, but in January, we got some snow, we got some ice, we got some thaws, we got some cold weather, ducks moved around and we were able to find some success,” Birch continued. “But we’re still not seeing the number of birds we’d like to on the landscape.”

Birch and Covert went on to talk about what causes were behind the disappointing season, what hunters can do on the individual level to support duck populations and The Standard Sportsman podcast, which Birch hosts with waterfowler Cason Short (and which you can listen to on greenhead.net).
